Why August Is the Best Month to Book Your Winter Holidays

Every August, the same feeling arrives.

The summer that felt so long in June has quietly started to shorten. School supplies appear. Bedtimes start to edge earlier. And somewhere between the last pool day and the first morning back, the year shifts.

It is also when most families are thinking least about travel. Which is exactly why I want to talk about it now.

The first time we went skiing as a family, nobody in our group had any real business being on a mountain. My husband had never skied in his life, he was 49. My boys were two and a half and five. I had not been on skis since school. We chose a resort specifically because it had a beautiful pool, because I needed a contingency plan if the whole thing fell apart.

My husband fell over. More than once. With genuine commitment.

The boys went into ski school, which sounds simple until you realise that very few resorts in the United States take children under five. Knowing which ones do was the detail that shaped the entire decision of where we went. It looks small on paper and makes an enormous difference on the ground.

It is also worth knowing that skiing in Europe is significantly less expensive than the US; lift passes, lessons, accommodation, and food included. If you can lock in flights early enough, a week in the Alps often costs less than the same week in Park City or Vail. It is one of those things that surprises families the first time they actually look at it properly.

That trip was chaotic and cold and one of the most joyful weeks we have ever had. The boys lasted exactly as long as their legs and patience allowed, and then we retreated to the pool without any guilt at all. It worked because we planned for reality, not the brochure version.

The families who have the most magical ski trips, the most seamless Thanksgiving escapes, the most memorable Christmas holidays, are never the ones who decide in October. They are the ones who make the decision now, in August, when the best options still exist.

The most sought-after ski chalets and lodge suites are already being held. Thanksgiving at the better resort properties fills quietly well before autumn arrives. Christmas travel, particularly anything multigenerational or international, needs proper runway to plan well.

If your family is thinking about a first ski trip, a Thanksgiving somewhere unexpected, or a Christmas that feels genuinely different this year, August is not too early. It is exactly the right time.

The pool is always a good backup plan. But the best trips start with a decision made before everyone else makes theirs.
